No one is more shocked than Emily when she struggles to make friends in her first year at college. Lonely and alienated, she’s the ideal target for Josh and his friends. When they first start talking Emily feels a bond forming between them. But she feels uneasy every time they meet that their time together is cut short as Josh and his friends have to attend a group meeting.
Slowly, we start to see the manipulation taking place. When Emily is invited to join their study group she’s excited to spend more time with people she feels understand her. Before we know it Emily is well and truly subsumed in the cult of The Kingship.
As this is told from Emily’s viewpoint she doesn’t register what’s happening for some time. It’s not until she’s chosen for a mission in Italy and one of her friends is killed that Emily starts to question what’s happening.
An interesting idea but hard to really get more detail than is allowed by Emily’s experience. She is rescued but the pacing of the closing stages felt very rushed.
