Tales from Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin
4.0
adventurous reflective medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated

In one of the essays in Space Crone, Le Guin criticises herself for the lack of women in Earthsea novels. Tales From Earthsea, a collection of short stories, builds up on that criticism to place women in (and the erasure of women from) the history of magic in Earthsea.

The stories themselves were okay, but I enjoyed the Foreword at the beginning and A Description of Earthsea at the end of the book much more.

In the foreword, Le Guin talks about why she decided to work on Tales from Earthsea, as well as the writing and publishing industry. The description of Earthsea shows Le Guin's interest and abilities in anthropology. She describes Earthsea not in a dry but an engaging way.

Overall enjoyable book for Earthsea fans, though definitely to be read after the other Earthsea books.
