What a gorgeous gift of a story!  Darcie Little Badger’s sophomore novel—longlisted for the National Book Award—follows a quietly asexual Indigenous American girl in Texas as she slowly connects with her heritage through another world of animal people.  Folkloric chapters following Oli the cottonmouth person and his friends alternate with chapters from Nina’s perspective in Texas—that is, until their worlds collide in a hurricane that threatens entire species, let alone houses and homes.  This book includes diverse characters with a range of sexualities and pronouns and discusses climate change, wealth inequality, the preservation of Indigenous language and culture, and much more.
