An Adult with an Autism Diagnosis: A Guide for the Newly Diagnosed by Gillan Drew
3.0
For those of you who have started your neurodiversity journey and are reading as much as you can about it (like I am), you might be thinking of reading this book despite reading the polarizing reviews about it and realizing that it was published in 2017 (like I did). While I did find parts of it not to my liking, I’m glad that I read it and am even more motivated to read other more recently published works about the topic of autism. I often found myself startled at the specific scenarios Drew described that have also brought some level of anxiety in myself at times.
Even so, I can’t quite give it a five-star rating because I can see some of the ableist, binary thinking going on in the text that I’m learning to “unlearn” myself. So, for those on the fence about reading it, read it anyway if only for the experience of reading about one person’s perspective rendered in a specific way about a certain kind of neurodiversity. Take it with that grain of salt, and be upon your merry way.
