A Quest of Heroes by Morgan Rice
4.0

This book is like The Princess Bride. It has something for everyone. The author is a good storyteller but repeats themselves a bit (even on the same page). This is a great coming-of-age story about a young man who doesn't seem to belong anywhere but has his heart set on training to be a soldier in the King's army.

My emotions were swept up in the story. I was scared when the characters were in danger, frustrated when the characters were blocked, enchanted especially by the introduction of the animals, and angry when the bad guys were winning. I was all set to give the book 5 stars and rush to get the next book in the series until the end. The book has a cliffhanger. What I expect from a book is to have something that the hero needs to solve, or win, or do to wrap up the book. SPOILERS

If the book had ended when Thor had finally been accepted in the king's army then there would be 5 stars all around but introducing a new problem and solving it in the last couple of chapters didn't do it for me. It felt like the author just wanted you to buy the next book and that generally pisses me off. If the book wasn't so good up to that point, that would have been the absolute end of my relationship with this author and I may regret my decision to continue the series but I really enjoyed everything but the end.
