The Color of Magic
by Terry Pratchett
1 1/2 stars
Randomness pulled out of a hat, a world of inverted cliche, a naive tourist and a wizard with a Death allergy. Many fun ideas and factors thrown into a blender to eject Color of Magic.
Although there were many ingredients for a crazy fun story, I found myself having difficulty enjoying it beyond a small smile here or there versus the LOL funny I had been expecting. The humor is random, and perhaps funny in measure, after a point I found it to be hackneyed, dull and just plaid negatively-absurd instead of witty. Rincewind and Twoflower make for a fantastic pair of main characters. Rincewind has just enough of a conscience to make him not an unlikable coward, whereas Twoflower has just enough brains and determination to not make me want to wring his naive neck.
The humor fell flat after a point for me. Even though Color of Magic isn't a long book, if I am going to read something shallow I'd prefer something a little less "...say what?" and shorter.
Despite my personal, negative reaction to the book, I would recommend it to fans of British humor, or of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The Color of Magic is very...colorful. If your humor is of the intended brand.
