We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

4.0

A class in subtext and concision, Jackson unspools the plot in bits and pieces, and keeps the tension winding tighter all the way to the fascinating denouement. The narrator isn't unreliable per se; but the writing voice draws you into her, uh, specific way of experiencing the world, and is executed throughout with cohesion and detail. Pick it up if you're looking for something a bit unsettling.
