Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?
by Jeanette Winterson
emotional
funny
reflective
medium-paced
Jeanette Winterson’s language is unparalleled, and I adored so much of this book, her story, her observations, the whole ride. I only wish she wouldn’t have so many epiphanies per line, every sentence a finale that is constantly asked to one-up itself. The emotions are dense and Winterson is direct and clear, and I would’ve devoured this book much more ferociously if the emotional labor wasn’t put a bit upon the reader too. Perhaps that is a good thing though, perhaps that is the power of words.
