I was going to give this book 3.75 stars because it was good but I don't usually read literary fiction so it just isn't hitting all of the mental metrics I need it to hit, but I really liked the mother's plot thread so I'm giving it 4 stars for that. This book wasn't sad enough to make me cry but by the end I just kind of felt really bad for all of the characters so if you want a book to give you mild secondhand depression, this one is good.
This book is also so British that it took a page to remind me that the main characters love the NHS and are so grateful that they have access to free healthcareand free abortions . I laughed out loud because honestly it was very charming.
