The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

3.0

This book started off as a middle-grade fantasy (sort of) and ended as a serious coming-of-age young adult novel which was an unexpected surprise. I'm not so into fairytale magic without a dark twist and limitations, but this book managed to create a transformative arc of a mortal hero trapped in the ruthless world of the fairies.

I think that the worldbuilding was a bit flat and it didn't give me the kind of feeling I'm looking for from similar books (I really like some things being explained and some plot holes fixes) and I also felt that there were some inconsistencies in the way the author presented information. Since this is a book that contains fairytale magic though with a twist, it's understandable, up to a degree, to not being a fantasy book with a unique magic system that needs explaining.

I'd like to read the next books in the series just because Jude, the mortal hero, has a character arc that's very persuasive with clear wants and needs that conflict with each other and I find the way she was written truly fascinating. Her thirst for power was the reason I kept reading the book and the ending was only appropriate.
