The Boyfriend by Daniel Hurst

Who is killing Adele’s ex boyfriends?

That question is what kept me reading this overlong book. Daniel’s books normally go by quickly for me, even if I’m not enjoying them, but this one was definitely a slog. Every suspect that I had was proven innocent and that is what kept me invested but as the story kept going I had a suspicion that the killer would be someone we never met. And I was somewhat right. But the reveal still fell flat for me.

So when Adele was 16 she had a traumatic brain injury that erased some of her memories. Prior to that she liked this guy, Shaun, but Shaun’s best friend Gareth also liked Adele. Gareth and Adele start to spend time together and form a connection. Then at a park, Adele accidentally falls and hits her head and Gareth basically leaves her there to die. She survives with no memories of her relationship with Gareth. Years later Gareth is upset that Adele has moved on, so he starts killing her exes and attempts to kill her fiance. Gareth breaks into her home confesses to his crimes and his love for her. She strangles him with a phone charger cord.
