The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

5.0

I read and loved this for the cozy fantasy romance story it is at face value. In that respect, 5 stars.

I've since learned that Klune has cited inspiration from Canadian residential schools and the trauma of indigenous children in those facilities, and in that sense this book is seriously problematic.

That tragic history deserves a much better representation than a cozy romance.

But I'm still glad that this story, in and of itself, exists and brings joy to readers. So I'll let my initial rating stand. Also in part because I think Klune is a kind and thoughtful person (as I've gathered from all his candid/blog writing) and I trust he will constantly try to educate himself and improve, as should we all, and doing so in the public eye is no easy feat.
