So, I was struggling with the first half of the book (again) I mean it was still good, far more intriguing than the first book because of the political unrest and intrigue was better than the first book. My biggest issue was the dialogue in the first half - it felt forced and choppy, but there was quite a bit of hate sex. The first half of the book I was actually really bugged, I felt that Poppy and Casteel were having the same conversation over and over again. I did not want Poppy to blindly trust Casteel after the ending of FBAA, she reiterated the same thing every chance she got "You kidnapped me, holding me hostage, forcing me to marry you." I think I read that at least 50 times within the first 155 pages, along with Casteel saying "Fight me, I want you to" was getting very old very quickly. Poppy fighting every.little.thing he said was annoying. Page 203, Poppy says to Casteel after he explaining to her about the gods and she says "You cannot be serious." I stated. He frowned "I'm completely serious." There was no way he was being honest. Has he recently given you any reason as of late to not trust him? No, he has not. He's actually been quite honest and you just need to open your ears and LISTEN. Also, thank goodness for Kieran on page 292, Poppy needs someone who was blunt and real with her to freaking open her freaking eyes!  “He wouldn’t be marrying you, risking the ire of not just his entire kingdom but also his parents, who you will soon discover are not two people you want to anger just so you have a chance to make it through this alive, free from the Ascended and from him. If that is what you choose,” he went on. “But more importantly, he would’ve stuck to the plan he spent years cultivating, and we would’ve already been halfway to Carsodonia to exchange you for his brother. Yet, here we are. And the only reason why any of that changed is because once he got to know you, he started to care for you.”
When Casteel had to feed off of Poppy it was... wow, very hot :'D even if Kieran was there, it was very, very good. Reading about what really happened with Shea broke my heart for Casteel, getting freed by your brother (who got captured) and then find out that the woman you loved and were engaged to sold you out to save her own skin, and then for you to turn around and kill her yourself... the stain on your soul that would cause...unimaginable.
“I don’t want to pretend,” I whispered. “I’m Poppy and you’re Casteel, and this is real.”  HA but of course we need a miscommunication trope right before everything! Page 390 Alister just HAD to freaking tell Poppy that Casteel was Promised to another. and then of course again on page 414 the sky has to catch fire as Casteel is admitting to Poppy how he TRULY feels "I didn't plan on being drawn to you. I didn't plan on risking everything to keep you. I didn't -"
It only took 80% and two books but we FINALLY got an admission of feelings between the two, right before the Duchess got to the keep, GOT MARRIED TOO AND I LOVE IT. So let's get into the rest of the meat of this meeting with Duchess Teerman. She stated that Poppy is the grand-daughter of the Queen of Blood.
Then Poppy killed the Duchess and that made me happy
then the messed up weirdness of Poppy and Casteel getting it on in the carriage where the Duchess was killed, it was weird, but very, very hot. I did not think that Kieran and the other Wolven would make it to the battle in time, but it was a relief that they did.
The travel through the Skotos Mountains was interesting... Poppy almost walking off a ledge of a cliff only to be saved by a god who awoke all so Poppy wouldn't fall was freaking cool. I was suspicious of Alister for awhile but I got even more suspicious when after Poppy awoke after the cliff and she realizes there was another person there the night her parent's died.
After they got to Atlantia and Beckett leads her to the Temple of Nyktos and suddenly he is gone and Poppy is being stoned to near death by people who believe that she is a threat to Atlantia and its people. She lost it trying to save herself and the raw freaking power she wields. THE WOLVEN BREAKING THEIR BONDS TO ATLANTIAN'S AND BONDING THEMSELVES TO POPPY WAS UNREAL.  “And bow before the…before the last descendent of the most ancient ones, she who carries the blood of the King of the Gods within her. Bow before your new Queen.”
