Ruin and Rising
by Leigh Bardugo
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 stars
Often the books published after the first installment in a series don’t live up to the hype or expectation but this couldn’t be further from the case with Ruin and Rising. This is by hands down my favorite installment in the trilogy. Is this because of Nikolai being a prominent character in the book… perchance. ((1000% YES.))
I love the dark, morally gray complexity of The Darkling. I love him calling Alina out for assuming he would ever hurt the Grisha children when they had already lost so many; when he wants to keep Grisha safe.
Minus one star for having Alina’s powers revoked in the end :,) I know that she and Mal fit the quiet life more after all that they’ve been through, and I read Leigh Bardugo’s interview(?) on the matter and yet… I still think it’s really disappointing.
