The Devouring Gray
by C.L. Herman
“Welcome to Four Paths. Nobody would stay here if they had a choice”
Think Mortal Instruments meets The Stranger Things! This is the story of the founding families of small town Four Paths and how they overcome their differences for the good of the town. Trapped on the edge of town a beast haunts the woods, trapped in the Gray, it’s bonds loosening...
Although this is claimed to be a queer read, I would use this term loosely. The main romances seem to be f/m and the author hints at queer relationships without actually giving us any. BUT, does the story need them? No! I would actually say that The Devouring Gray makes any relationship acceptable. It wasn’t made a big deal for these characters to be queer and that is where we want society to reach isn’t it?
As a Halloween read this is PERFECT. Not hide-beneath-the-covers scary BUT spooky, intense and haunting. Set in a town surrounded by woods, with old rituals and ancient stone buildings, this is the perfect modern gothic read with a storyline that has you hooked. Far from predictable, I found myself loving this way more than I thought I would!
The characters are extremely complex teenagers, each with their own issues and burdens. The author doesn’t just tell us a story of a bunch of kids trying to save the town. No. The Devouring Gray deals with issues such as struggling with grief; loss of identity; sexuality; relationships with parents; and fitting in with your peers. There is a character for everyone; from popular boy Justin, extremely troubled Isaac, mis-fit May, once- popular Harper and the unapologetically honest Violet- we follow these young people as they find themselves as well as the town’s secrets.
And the ending; I just didn’t see that coming! Be warned; you’ll want the next one!
The Devouring Gray is definitely a book to be devoured! (See what I did there!?)
