I forced myself to finish it because the author seemed so lovely, and thinking there must be some denouement that explains why so many people loved it, and I just don't get it. Fascinating world with overblown descriptions start interesting then seem to eat the plot, flat characters.

Also possible trigger warning with the bury your gays trope.
