Well. I don't know how to feel about this. Turns out a 21st century Brontë novel is just as bleak.
Not a single likeable character in the novel and they're all thoroughly miserable throughout so you can't even be mad about it. The romance is inappropriate and unearned and non-existent and neither of them seem to enjoy any piece of it. I mean it's brilliantly Brontë to its core but, ugh why?
