Loveless by Alice Oseman

3.0

Loveless by Alice Oseman is definitely not the kind of book that I usually read, but I decided to give it a try in order to see if it lived up to the hype. I’d seen and heard so many great things about it and the aro/ace representation we can find in it so I had to. Now, after I’ve had some time to gather my thoughts and feelings about it, I can conclude that yes, the representation was good, but that’s about it. Maybe it’s because this book is targeted at a younger audience but I couldn’t really relate or even cared about most of the characters in this book. That doesn’t mean I completely hated this book or feel like I wasted my time with it. If anything, I just feel like it didn’t reach my expectations at all. I enjoyed some of the drama, The Shakespeare Company, and some character interactions, but that’s about it. I can’t even say I loved the aro/ace representation in it because, being completely honest, I would’ve loved for this book to be more about the main character discovering and dealing with her sexuality in her own way than just schooling everyone about what it means to be asexual and how it’s a real thing. But maybe that’s just me.

Like I mentioned before, I wasn’t a big fan of the characters in the book. I do admit that I loved Sunil and Jason, but that was about it. They made the story and the drama more enjoyable and I always looked forward to their appearances because of how calm their personalities were compared to the others. I personally loved Sunil because how welcoming and open he was with our main character about who he was, what he was, and how there was nothing wrong in being like him. I also enjoyed his role as a college parent and how he was always there for our mc when no one else was so maybe I’m a little biased.

In the end, Loveless was a short and fast-paced coming of age story that I enjoyed but didn’t love. I enjoyed the representation for aro/ace people, but I wish we could’ve gotten more out of it than just having to school or be schooled about the topic to prove that it’s a real thing and that it’s valid even when the people around you don’t know what it means. Overall, it was still a pretty decent book so make sure you check it out if you’re still curious about it!
