Foundation by Isaac Asimov

Similar to how I felt about ‘Dune’ when I read that last year, I can appreciate this book for its profound, foundational influence on science-fiction without having felt fully immersed in the story. The scope and the vision here is immense and I was hooked during the first segment as it set up the thrust of the series, introducing Hari Seldon and his ‘psychohistorical’ prophecy. The concept of telling the story of a an Empire and a scientific foundation over centuries, focusing in on five critical and climactic moments in its rise to galactic power is a great narrative concept but, I must admit, as a modern reader, I rarely felt hooked beyond the first couple of stories. A big part of this was the fact that I was listening to the audiobook which was also a problem with ‘Dune’ so, lesson learned, stay away from seminal sci-fi texts in audiobook format! I’ll continue to read the series in book form only I think.
