Against Empire by Michael Parenti

informative medium-paced

4.5

Brilliantly written overview of American imperialism. Informative yet still engaging and well-organised. I really enjoyed the Subcomandante Marcos quote at the end. It’s important with books like these to not leave the reader completely disheartened and to remind them of all the struggles currently taking place against imperialism.

Took off half a star because of the lack of footnotes and sourcing - certainly would be off putting to someone more unfamiliar with these topics. And because some of his remarks about drugs feel outdated. Drugs were not ‘practically’ legal and the war on drugs was central to the rise of mass incarceration in the US.
