This book is historical fantasy and it is fluffy with some romance and mystery. I typically have not enjoyed urban fantasy but historical fantasy works for me. I enjoyed the relationships between characters and the social commentary.

I enjoyed the plot twists and reveals. There is also a lot of commentary on women and gender roles. The way women who are magicians are consistently underestimated. There is a particularly humorous moment when a character says she knows it was men who run the organization because they chose to tail and curse the man who was new to the office and been there less than a day rather than capture and interrogate the woman who had been working there for a year.
