I was so close to giving this book five stars: mythology, eldritch creatures, meditation on the human condition…! It had everything I love! The writing style was also excellent, the somewhat repetitive structure of the chapters reminded me of folk/fairy tales and although I knew the twist was coming, most of the horrifying truths about the beasts were unexpected and terrific. I just wish the author didn’t include the last twist in the story, it made the ending fall flat for me.
