We Spread by Iain Reid

5.0

I’ve seen this book be described as hypnotic and find that to be most accurate word for my own experience reading it. This was a whole trip - slow-moving, unsettling and full of uncertainty and suspense. And boy, does Iain have a way with words. They seem simplistic but carrying a weight you don’t notice ‘till a bit later and by the end of this, I’m just in awe of his storytelling abilities.

Anyways, in this book we’re following Penny who has just moved into a long-term care facility and soon after her arrival she starts to lose her grasp on the passage of time and begins questioning the odd happenings around her.
Why is there only four residents?
How did her nails get so long so fast?
Why can’t she go outside?

As someone deeply afraid of what all comes with growing old and the fragility of memory, this book was a stark reminder of the inevitabilities that come with the passage of time.
Am I feeling a little anxious after finishing this? Yes.
