The Rebel
by Sophie Lark
It took me some time to really get into this one with everything going on with life right now, but once I did I finished it in one sitting. The Rebel turned out much better than the first book to my relief. I could say that I found a part of myself in Zoe and the way she generally behaves and Miles couldn't be a better match for her, I'm talking from personal experience once again.
Miles is the kind of main character I didn't think I would ever find in a mafia book, which was a welcome change. He's an alpha male who can become brutal if needed but always looks for a loophole that serves his best interest at any given time, so he won't have to turn to violence. The way he dealt with Zoe's arranged marriage and how he made everything work out, in the end, is the most prominent example of how he prefers brain over muscle when it comes to dealing with anything in his life. Also, the fact that he chose to take a step away from the mafia world and everything that is considered his birthright and go after his actual dreams is so refreshing.
On the other hand, seeing Zoe evolve and change slowly from what we saw in the first book and for a part of this one was just beautiful. She for once put her own needs and wants first and was determined to make it work even if close to the end she took a step back trying to save everyone else once again.
The most shocking thing that happened has to be the execution, I was dumbfounded by how fast everything happened at the fight between everyone, and from that point, up till the end I literally inhaled the book.
I definitely think this is a step up from the first one and even though there were some points that I found really slow and kind of boring, it was a great result overall.
