I can't even...what an amazing story...I just finished reading it and I'm so upset with myself for not having read it sooner! I won this book months ago through a goodreads giveaway and it just sort of sat on my shelf. I knew I would get to it eventually, but I'm really annoyed with myself that it took me this long to read. This is only my 4th book of 2018 and I can already tell it will be the best book I read this entire year. What I enjoyed most about this book was that the story unfolded over so many decades, chronicling Cyril's entire life, and I feel like I watched a character's entire lifespan from childhood to adolescence to adulthood to old age and finally, impending death. I bore witness to Cyril's every painful transition, slight, tragedy, struggle and later his redemption. I've never known a book character as well as I know Cyril Avery. A truly unique book that I can't recommend enough. I'm going to busy bingeing every one of John Boyne's books because I am now a lifelong fan.
