Fatherland (20th anniversary edition)
by Robert Harris
"However this war may end, we have won the war against you; none of you will be left to bear witness, but even if someone were to survive, the world would not believe him. There will perhaps be suspicions, discusssions, research by historians, but there will be no certainties, because we will destroy the evidence with you. And even if some proof should remain and some of you survive, people will say that the events you describe are too monstrous to be believed: they will say that they are the exaggerations of Allied propaganda and will believe us, who will deny everything, and not you. We will be the ones to dictate the history of the Lagers".
- SS officer, quoted in "the Drowned and the Saved" by Primo Levi
This book sent shivers down my spine. The dystopian world post world war two where Hitler won is painted starkly in black and white. The Jews have disappeared somewhere east, relocated. In this world Xavier March tries do discover the truth behind two deaths and one disappearance of some higher Party officials. They must have something in common which is the key to their demise.
The premise and setting are brilliant. The parallels to the world today and where we may be in 20 years after a third world war are deeply troubling. History circles itself. When enough water has run under the bridge, we repeat earlier mistakes and step into known traps. My problem is that the story and thriller elements are weak. I kept being distracted and had difficulties reading more than three pages at a time. An interesting read due the setting, as for the rest, it's pretty mediocre.
