The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey

4.0

On the surface of it, a great yarn, but just below that surface it is also a decently impactful look at misogyny, race, friendship, colonialism, masculinity and sex. I found that Roffey let the story do the talking, and let her deep themes sit in the shallows so that they could be glimpsed and felt with every wave. I wasn’t deeply struck, but the characters were well drawn, points well made, a world well constructed, and a story well told.
