A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity by Nicholas D. Kristof

5.0

Kristof and WuDunn have followed up their incredible Half the Sky with this close look at organizations around the world and successes they have found addressing issues of poverty and exploitation.

A Path Appears lacks the focus that its predecessor had--locked as HTS was on issues of women's empowerment around the world. That makes it a little harder to follow, easier to put down. But what APA does include is a depth that HTS didn't have. WuDunn and Kristof aren't just interested in what looks great, they also focus on what works, what can be proven, and what charities must do to ensure that they are spending donations most effectively.

I'll admit, my favorite anecdotes from the book showed that there is an inoculation against ignorance in America: it's about getting books into the hands of infants and toddlers who miss out on opportunities for learning and vocabulary expansion during key years of brain development.
