The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm: Eragon
by Christopher Paolini
2,5 stars
This short story collection consists of three parts: The Fork, The Witch and The Worm. Eragon's life is used as a framing device, so the narration is consistent, but the short stories are not part of an overarching storyline.
THE FORK
This is my favourite story. One of my favourite characters from The Inheritance Cycle shows just how awesome and badass they are. Unfortunately, the questions and mysteries raised in this section are left unanswered and I'm hoping they'll be addressed at some point.
THE WITCH
The Witch is about two fascinating characters from the The Inheritance Cycle. Elva is complex, a child who was "blessed" with power, so the terrible parts of her personality makes sense. Angela is formidable and an incomplete and unstructured autobiography is totally fitting, but the snippets of her story are uninteresting and she still remains a mystery.
THE WORM
I cared the least about this section. It's a beautiful story, with interesting themes, a strong character and a well-written journey, but I wasn't invested.
This short story collection leaves more mysteries and unanswered questions and doesn't add much as a sort of sequel to The Inheritance Cycle. The ending is exciting and it's nice to see and hear about familiar characters.
This collection has shown the richness and vastness of Alagaësia. There's so much potential for more storytelling.
"Every choice they made affected not only the future of the Riders but the very survival of the dragons, and if they chose badly, both might end."

THE FORK
“Because a scar means you survived. It means you’re tough and hard to kill. It means you lived. A scar is something to admire.”
This is my favourite story. One of my favourite characters from The Inheritance Cycle
