i have never before in my life read a book that so well captures - if it discusses at all - the experience of health and body anxiety. and i LOVED it.
i almost gave it a lower rating for some lagging parts and for the ultra male pov, but it is literally meant to be the personal diary of a man so kind of nonsensical point. i think the book is strongest when it ruminates on body anxiety and our relationship, existentially speaking, to embodiment and life through the body, and is weakest when it tackles social and political analysis.
in a way it complements les années by annie ernaux in the sense that it chronicles the same period of french history, although this is a deeply personal account, and has the body focus.
i just really enjoyed it, found it unlike anything else i've read, and felt so seen by all the depictions of anxiety.
