I am so pleased to read the overall positive reactions to this book! I read 'Of Mice and Men' and 'The Grapes of Wrath' in high school and enjoyed them, especially the latter.
I was able to pick up a first edition of this at the library book sale the summer after I graduated and I loved it. It definitely does not seem like a Steinbeck book at all but he clearly had a good time writing this and it shows. Picking on the French is like shooting fish in a barrel but Steinbeck had a lot of affection for them and that's what makes this satire a good read.
