First of all, it took me nearly half the book to figure out that our MMC, Duncan, was the same one from Happiness For Beginners. I guess I wasn’t paying attention.

I liked the premise of this book and I like Katherine Center’s books in general. They definitely veer more toward women’s lit or chick lit with a side of romance rather than a straight up romance, which is fine. My issue is… maybe it’s the narration? I’m not sure why I don’t wholly connect with the book. I question some of the choices that the characters make. They seem irresponsible, thoughtless, or straight up ridiculous sometimes. Reckless, yes. Definitely that as well. I’m also not sure I like the characters’ personalities all that much. To say they’re annoying is not quite accurate, but they are that a little. Unrealistic, perhaps? Unprofessional, for sure. Now that I think about it, it could be immaturity.

KC gets into some heavy topics (TW for: school shootings, epilepsy, death on page, child neglect, emotional abuse) in this book and I don’t know if the mood of the overall book meets that gravity. Maybe she was trying to balance that, but for me it was missing something. I’m going to keep reading her books in hopes that writing experience will improve the quality. I guess hopefulness is something that the author and I have in common.
