Laura Dave delivers an impressive, thoughtful, and engaging domestic suspense catered around a strained, but developing relationship between Hannah and her sixteen year old stepdaughter Bailey.

The story hits the ground running with the sudden disappearance of Hannah’s husband Owen, who leaves behind nothing but a cryptic note saying “protect her” with reference to his daughter Bailey. There are numerous twists and turns throughout the book as Hannah and Bailey join forces to uncover the truths behind Owen’s disappearance - truths that I would’ve never guessed myself.

While the plot was exciting and kept me flying through the pages, it was the character development and budding relationship between Hannah and Bailey that truly made this book stand out from a typical suspense novel. I also loved that a good chunk of this book took place in Austin, my former college town! Dave clearly did her research/knows the city well - the setting was so accurately depicted and reading about it felt like a walk down memory lane for me.

I wasn't all too satisfied with the epilogue as I didn't think it delivered enough closure, but this is still an excellent read overall!
