The Polygamist's Daughter: A Memoir
by Anna LeBaron
I have been and probably always will be, fascinated by the stories of people who have escaped cults. This book was no different, and I want to make it clear that a rating on Goodreads IS NOT a rating of Anna's experience or life. All a rating on Goodreads is, is a reflection of my experience with the book. ONLY the book.
That said, this was a fine experience, but nothing else. The prose were uncomplicated and little novice feeling at times. I believe Anna used a ghost writer, so I am sad that the prose weren't a little more skillful. If they had been perhaps this book could have been elevated from the 3 stars. As it stands, it felt emotionless at times. While horrific things were happening to little Anna, the reader feels removed. Held at arm's length by the prose. Themes of parental betrayal, which are present late in the book, could have been stronger earlier on if the writing had been more emotional. That said, if I am incorrect and Anna did not use a ghost writer it makes more sense that her writing would be flawed, but either way it lets her down.
Anna did read the audiobook, and the emotion in her voice near the end of the book elevated things slightly.
Final thought: if you see someone going through a dumpster... no you didn't.
