First Love, Take Two
by Sajni Patel
3.5 I enjoyed the first-person voice more than I was expecting, and while the heroine frustrated me sometimes, part of that is because I related so much to her anxiety and difficulty communicating -- her flaws were written very well imo. It does drag a bit towards the end, but I felt very good about the happy ending.
Though I will say, I found the wealth angle kind of off-putting. I wasn't expecting it, and because this story is more grounded in the real world than say, a Harlequin Presents with a billionaire tycoon hero, the conspicuous consumption bits grated on me more. When I open an HP, I set aside my feelings about real-life rich people and I can take the luxury porn as symbolic without thinking too much about where all that wealth came from. But here I was like, where did those diamonds come from?
