Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands
by Kate Beaton
I think my favorite stories about how much capitalism sucks don't go to extremes about it to the point where it becomes satire. Satire, by its nature, doesn't paint realistic characters or behaviors. But Kate Beaton's Ducks share how dangerous and toxic (quite literally) capitalism is to our society as told through an acute individual perspective. It's told through those sorts of moments that scar some for life, but are quickly forgotten by others, which make them all the more precious to share. Every moment of basic decency just feels like an oasis, an affirmation of how to not only survive through society's numerous grinders, but to feel human while doing so. Hopefully we get to reach the other side of it.
