The Secret of Crickley Hall by James Herbert

5.0

Books are strange, aren't they? Or maybe I should say authors are strange. One minute they can write rubbish (take Creed for example. Review here) and the next they can write beautiful books like this.

However... If you like to get into the story and plot straight away, wanting to know who is who, who knows who or who is doing who, you are going to be sadly disappointed. This is what you might call a 'slow burner' and it took me about a third of the book (200 pages or so) to get into it. In fact, I nearly filed it under 'B' and had I not revitalised my faith by reading some reviews I would have.

The beginning builds the back story, it introduces you to the characters and sets the scene but it is also highly repetitive. If you can stick with it though, you will be entranced, intrigued and enchanted. Some of you may even shed a tear.

In my review of Creed I promised never to read another James Herbert book again unless it was recommeneded to me. I broke that rule and am so glad I did. I think you will too.
