WOW. This book scared the bejesus out of me. It starts right in--no character development, no explanations, no idyllic descriptions of the contryside, just bam!--and from there it just never stops. It centers on a small town in Wisconsin, with the rather ironic name of Safe Haven. There is one road into the town and one road out--great if you like your privacy, horrible if you're stuck in the middle of a nightmare. And this is a doozy of a nightmare. I don't want to give away any of the plot points, because figuring it out is half the fun. The other half, of course, is trying not to let your mouth drop open in absolute horror while you're figuring it out. This is some grisly stuff, but Kilborn shows remarkable restraint in his descriptions, making your imagination fill in the blanks. It's almost worse than having it all spelled out for you. Afraid is the like the best scary movie--it's what you don't know that kills you. Kilborn has definitely made my "when's his next book out" list!
