Book 4 of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series - we are so back, baby! After struggling a bit with book 3, "The Gate of the Feral Gods" gave us a much more straightforward world but upped the ante on the stakes in a satisfying and intriguing way.
I love how Matt Dinniman continues to grow and strengthen our core cast of characters of Carl, Donut, Katia and Mordecai while also having them interact with other crawlers and NPCs in ways that gives us new perspectives in the broader story. Watching Carl and Donut's evolutions as characters has been really gratifying and it's fun to see Carl put the pieces of the puzzle together and try to figure out how to save as many crawlers as possible instead of just fighting for their own lives. The action sequences were really next level in this one - especially the end.
I'm really enjoying the political additions to the storyline and getting a deeper understanding of the world that Carl and Donut are working so hard to fight. The epilogue was a really big departure from the rest of the book and had me absolutely locked in for the next book. What a twist (that I truly did not see coming!)
