Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

mysterious reflective medium-paced

5.0

Wow I was floored by this novel that takes place across the centuries from the 1900s to the 2400s. It examined humanity and life in such an fascinating way. I also thought it’s commentary on colonization and the way we view it depending on the different forms it takes to be so interesting. It had just enough sci-fi while still keeping things realistic and more focused on the humanity of it all. I’m going to leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the book that I just know will stick with me for a long time:

“I think, as a species, we have a desire to believe that we’re living at the climax of the story. It’s a kind of narcissism. We want to believe that we’re uniquely important, that we’re living at the end of history, that now, after all these millennia of false alarms, now is finally the worst that it’s ever been, that finally we have reached the end of the world.”
