I liked this book but it wasn’t a favorite. I liked the how main character Mad’s had decent character development and growth but a lot of the conflict felt very juvenile to me.
This book follows high schooler Madeline as she prepares to be a bridesmaid in her bother’s wedding. But there’s just one problem. She doesn’t exactly have the best relationship with her soon to be sister-in-law Katie. Mads reluctantly agrees to a game of truth or dare where she confesses that she’s never been kissed or had a first date. This sets up a series of dates with potential suitors.

At first it seems like the book is headed towards a friends to lovers trope with Mad’s best friend Connor. But they end up finding out that they don’t have a romantic spark between them.
(Also I liked Marco but now that I think about it he was 21 and Mads was 17??? Girl isn’t even legal age yet…)
I really didn’t like Katie. She seemed so immature and some of her friends did too. She also had such an attitude and disdain towards Madeline (for no reason) and I don’t think that was fair when Madeline was trying to get to know her. And then in the end we find out why Katie has been acting the way she has and it’s because she’s shy and an introvert. Now I’m shy and an introvert but I would never act the way she did. I thought the whole conflict between them could’ve been resolved with a simple conversation. I don’t think her redemption arc was entirely deserved but oh well.
Overall the book was fine, but I can see why this is a YA book. I felt similarly after I read What Happens After Midnight. The Summer of Broken Rules was by far my favorite so far. (I also did like the call back to Meredith and Wit from The Summer of Broken rules, and Lily Hopper from WHAM).
