I reached the end of this book and am left questioning whether I actually enjoyed reading it. I think it’s beautifully written, the characters are well fleshed out and have complicated inner lives but I feel like the meaning of the story was lost on me. I thought it was about faith and the ways people do or don’t make meaning in a life/world that is brutal and short, but I also saw an article saying it was an allegory for capitalism. So while I did enjoy reading the book and the world and characters Moshfegh created something feels missing for me.
