Joe Pickett is a game warden for the Wyoming National Forest. He lives in a small town called Saddlestring. He lives with his daughters and wife in a small house that all the game warden before him have lived in. Joe hears shots in the mountains and rushes to find out what is happening. He arrives to find Lamar Gardiner loading his gun with cigarettes and dead Elk all around in the beginning of a massive snowstorm. Later, when the snowstorms get worse, Lamar escapes his custody and Joe finds him dead from arrows in his chest. Joe has a feeling that there’s more this murder and investigates. Joe is a lone hero who really doesn’t want to be one. He faces evil and mayhem with cool and sometimes rage that gets him to the end game. Joe Pickett is a character that I have come to love. He sees right among many wrongs. Even in the face of his grief he plans a way out for his grief and helps his wife come out of her depression. If you have read Craig Johnston’s Longmire series, you will love this series. Small towns, murder, and lone heroes have a way of grabbing me at the first page. CJ Box’s Joe Pickett series is a winner for me. I’m starting from the beginning and working my way through the series. I hope Joe Pickett delivers more in the next book!
