I often remind myself that people's lives existed long before me. That before she was my mother she was a younger woman. There is something so compelling about each personal narrative.
As Lara told her story, I felt like I was there. Picking cherries during the first pandemic summer, isolated from the world in a little idyllic, liminal space. Time in those years didn't pass normally.
I found this book peaceful in a way I really needed right now. Meryl Streep's narration definitely helped with that too (I enjoyed both the physical and audio experiences of this story). The characters are flawed and perhaps unsatisfying but I was never bored or confused by their motivations.
I think I'm ready to settle down in the country with my 'Joe' and farm cherries. Ready to build a life and a family close to it's roots.
