Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor

5.0

Daughter of Smoke & Bone is one of those rare books that you have to force yourself to read slowly for fear that the experience will be over too soon. Otherwise, you would speed through it because you don't want to put it down. Laini Taylor has created a world that is engrossing from the first page through the last. Her prose is lyrical; her characters vivid. There is a romance at the center of this novel, but, as is true with good books, the surrounding plot has bigger stakes -- war between species, family loyalty, and several mysteries. The mysteries pull you in from the first chapter. You wonder who Karou is and how she lives in two worlds-- one human, one of mystical beasts. You want to know more about this character named Brimstone and his enigmatic task of making necklaces from teeth. You question why the seraphs are leaving burnt handprints on doors around the the world. As all of these mysteries are unraveled, the answers raise more questions and draw you further into this magical world.
