I expected a lot from this novel. Especially since the summary said it was perfect for fans of Haunting of Hill House and I’ll be gone in the dark. But somehow the very slow rythm of it threw me off. It’s a book that feels claustrophobic, being almost completely set inside the Crowder House with very few characters. I am not used to this and I was even wondering if I’d be able to finish it for at least half of it. But I’m glad I did. The more you come close to the end the more nightmarish it becomes. It feels like slowly giving in to your inner demons. Like reaching your breaking point, like a psychosis completely took over. I was somehow expecting a little bit more of narration about what Francis Crowder did exactly in the house somehow. But I get that it is not really what this story is about.
