Pros: the writing itself is very good, it’s smart and in places extremely funny. Emily has a strong character voice and Faerie as a setting is vivid and magical. There is a dog, and also a cat.
Cons: this book felt so disjointed. At times it seemed like we were going down a checklist, “and then we did this, and then we did this.” Especially in the latter half, nothing was really given room to breathe. The story seems to want to have its cake and eat it too, trying to maintain that “cozy” feeling while making gestures at higher stakes, but things are done and undone so quickly that it’s hard to feel any of it. More than any other book in this series, this one was at times a bit of a slog.
But if you want some romance, and some adventure, and some magic, you will find it all here, done in a unique and clever style by a writer who knows what she’s doing.
