Aftercare by Tanya Chris
3.0
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I’m feeling…strangely underwhelmed. Aftercare dealt with some interesting and at the same time tough topics. It dealt with grief, religion, bdsm and there was some court room drama too. As I was fascinated to see how all of these would be explored in the story, after finishing the book I felt like there were just not enough pages to fully develop everything it addressed. Therefore, for me, the story lacked depth.
However, I really enjoyed getting to know the characters. Aside from the main characters, Garret and Aayan, there’s Aayan’s brother Syed. He is on trial for a murder he didn’t commit and Garret is his lawyer. What’s more, both of them deal with the loss of their partners.
And then there’s Aayan. I’m trying to be vague and not to give away any spoilers, so all you need to know is his and Garret’s relationship was my favorite part of the book. I loved how Garret brought out the inner dom in Aayan. I loved the tension and the chemistry between them. But, as mentioned above, the depth of their relationship was left to the imagination.
Still, the story has potential and there are the other two books in the series, which I am sure as the story expands it becomes more complex and consequently gains the depth I long for. I do recommend it if you want an interesting read that you’ll fly through.
