The Familiar
by Leigh Bardugo
adventurous
dark
hopeful
mysterious
medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven:
A mix
Strong character development:
Yes
Loveable characters:
Complicated
Diverse cast of characters:
No
Flaws of characters a main focus:
Yes
Slow to start, pacing picked up partway through and felt a lot more zippy. I liked that it added in perspectives from other characters as it helped flesh them out further.
Sometimes the writing felt a bit simile-heavy or unnecessarily verbose, but once the plot had picked up I found I wanted to keep reading to find out what would happen with the torneo and its aftermath.
I’m not entirely sure how I feel about Lucia’s character. I didn’t find her that likable but I think that was intentional as she was meant to be flawed. I was still rooting for her regardless. Other characters like Victor were more one dimensional and clearly just there as a “baddie” foil.
I wasn’t particularly aware of this bit of Spanish history so I enjoyed the author’s note at the end.
