Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

I mean, it wasn’t as good as everybody says it was.

I didn’t really like or connect Leah or Abby, the characters I was supposed to be rooting for in this book. In fact I think they were my least favourite characters of the bunch (yikes!)

After the halfway point I felt like it was just dragging, just repeated interactions between Abby and Leah. The Garrett situation was unnecessary, poor guy was like a side plot to reinforce the Leah-Abby dynamic. By the end I was jus convinced that Abby was heartless tbh.

Leah’s attitude got annoying real quick. It was the cringe edgy teenager bullshit. And her getting angry or annoyed at every little thing and blowing everyone off just got frustrating! She was awful to her mom and said some very rude things which she would not have gotten away with where I’m from.

I did love Simon though so might be picking up his book soon. I’m still on the fence though, as the writing just felt really slow to me. It felt like I’d been reading for ages although this was a pretty short book.
